Peppermill Lunar Jam
August '08
The first Peppermill Music Festival was a great success, thanks to all the wonderful people that attended, as well as the amazing performers. It was free to attend, and went down at Pierce Lake, British Columbia, a 10km hike up a mountain, quite the trek for the roughly fifty attendees. But once you got there it was completely worth it. Up, up, up we went...
We all found spots for our tents, set up, went for a swim, and took it all in...
The first night of music began right after supper, with some opening ceremonies...
That was Freeze & Fur Coat doing the American national anthem, and Katie and David representing us Canadians. And Lara & friends singing for Australia. Here's a couple of dark pics of that night's festivities...
The line-up consisted of El May, Nick Caceres, Via Tania, Sun Aristocrats, Molly Hamilton, Freeze & Fur Coat, and Katie GoGo with David Richard. We had good intentions of recording the entire precedings but unfortunately, technical difficulties prevented that, however we salvaged a few sounds...
The next morning after breakfast a number of us packed a lunch and headed to Upper Pierce Lake, a relatively short but adventurous hike up to the alpine...
And from there, with a 74-year old superman leading the way, a few of us headed up for the top of Mount McFarlane, where we also had a view of the majestic Slesse peak...
So we all made it back down to camp safely, and had a delicioius salmon feast thanks to Rachael and Argun (there in spirit) our amazing cooks. There was food for vegans and others as well in case anyone's curious. After enjoying a bit of the evening by the lake, we gathered round the fire and passed the guitar and other instruments around, and took turns in the fun. And when the perfect weekend weather was interrupted briefly with a bit of rain, we retreated to shelter...
The next morning we woke up, ate breakfast, cleaned up, duct-taped gear and waste to ourselves... instruments and food were flown up, but we had to pull together as a group to get everything back down and leave the campsite spotless... and made it safely back to our cars in the mist.
It was a memorable weekend, and we look forward to putting on another festival next summer. New location, middle of August once again, possibly even more challenging to attend, we'll let you know when we decide on a spot (somewhere in BC). And in 2010 it will probably take place in Europe and after that, who knows for sure. Someplace exotic, somewhere else on the planet. See you there!
